A No-Nonsense TOPIK I Study Plan

By Hookitlingo ยท Free & offline Korean courses

TOPIK I is the entry-level Korean proficiency exam most learners take first, for university applications, visas, or just to have a real benchmark of where they stand. It covers two levels (1 and 2) across listening and reading, no speaking or writing section. Here's the roadmap we use ourselves to structure our free TOPIK prep courses, stripped of filler.

The six-stage path

The mistake most self-studiers make Jumping straight to practice tests before stage 6 feels productive but backfires. You end up testing gaps you haven't filled yet instead of confirming gaps you have. Follow the order.

How long should this take?

For a consistent 30-45 minutes a day, most learners move through stages 1-5 in about 8-10 weeks, then spend the final 2-3 weeks purely on timed practice tests. If you're starting from zero Korean knowledge, budget closer to 12 weeks total.

What actually moves the score needle

Two things disproportionately affect TOPIK I scores: reading speed (not vocabulary size, you can know a word and still run out of time finding it in a passage) and comfort with numbers/time, which are tested constantly but often under-practiced because they feel "basic."
